Around 42 bodies of government troops killed in battle at Elephant Pass during the past few days were due to be handed over by the LTTE to the Security Forces through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) yesterday in Vavuniya, sources said. The Security Forces Headquarters in Vavuniya has made arrangements to identify the bodies and hand them over to the next kin of the deceased, while arrangements have also been made to cremate the unidentified bodies with religious rites and full military honours, military sources said. According to sources, Security Forces who were located on the Northern Defences of Pallai were returning to the delaying positions North of Pallai as troops have been scattered due to mortar and artillery attacks by Tigers. The regrouped troops are reported to be consolidating in the areas North of Pallai and strengthening their positions in the relocated defence lines in the area.
