The UNP,
at crisis talks yesterday with President Kumaratunga, at the Temple Trees
urged her to lift the military censorship, which they say is dangerous as
well as futile, sources said. According
to UNP Minister, Karu Jayasuriya, the questions of foreign intervention,
setting up of a National Defence Council consisting of representatives
from government and the opposition were not taken up for discussion.
Government
ministers and the UNP delegation attended the one-hour meeting at the
Temple Trees. The UNP
delegation consisted of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, Karu
Jayasuriya and General Secretary Gamini Atukorala.
Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake and the Deputy Minister Anuruddha
Ratwatte, Defense Secretary and the President's Secretary were also
present at the meeting. According
to sources, UNP delegation asked to summon an urgent Cabinet session on
Friday. Since the Deputy
Minister would be unavailable on that particular date it was decided to
settle the Elephant Pass debacle on the scheduled date of 9th May.
The UNP
delegation was thoroughly briefed about the current situation, with regard
to the war and the opportunity was given to the UNP to clarify certain
doubts, about the current situation of the war.
The
Opposition leader strongly recommended to take the people in to confidence
and to have regular briefings about the exact casualty figures. It was a
positive sign that the government is intimate with the Opposition, as
unity in the south is essential for the peace process, Karu Jayasuriya
observed.
