Country on war footing to defeat the LTTE : President Kumaratunga appeals the nation to join hands

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at a cabinet meeting presided over by her yesterday decided on tough new measures to combat LTTE terrorism and the entire Cabinet agreed unanimously to mobilise the country on a war footing with immediate effect while also continuing unabated its efforts to find solutions to the ethnic problem.

President Kumaratunga also stated that she was greatly encouraged by the excellent support given by the international community at this moment of time.

Under this scheme, the Cabinet decided that all expenditure which has been apportioned for non-essential development would be temporarily suspended for three months. If necessary, such funds will be entirely diverted to the war effort. 

They also decided to continue uninterrupted the process of finding a solution to the ethnic problem which is the cause of the armed conflict. 

The Ministers had also decided that they would not temporarily draw their increased salaries. 

The President and the Cabinet also appeals to the entire nation to join hands at this juncture shedding all differences.
