Six youths arrested in credit card purchases : Possible LTTE links
[04 May 2000]

Six youths were arrested by the Piliyandala police after the suspects purchased goods worth over ten million rupees from Super Markets using Credit Cards belonging to a foreign businessman.

Investigations are now being conducted by the Terrorist Investigation Unit of Mount Lavinia to look in to any possible links and to find out whether the purchased had been dispatched to the LTTE.

When the suspects produced a Credit Card at the Super Market, Piliyandala after purchasing cigarettes and milk powder worth about one lakh, the owner of the shop on suspicion had informed the Piliyandala police. The police after arriving immediately had arrested the suspects.

Police investigations have also revealed that the Credit Card belonged to a Canadian and that several other purchases also had been done at Super markets in Colombo and suburbs.

Three suspects are from Jaffna and Vavuniya, police revealed.

Police had recovered goods worth about 26 lakhs by April 26.

 Investigations are now in progress.
