Sri Lanka resumes diplomatic ties with Israel
[05 May 2000]

With the decision to place the country on a war footing, the government yesterday announced that it had decided to resume diplomatic ties with Israel, a move which authorities say would help in fighting back the LTTE.

The modality of resuming diplomatic ties and details on diplomatic representation will be discussed and finalised by the two governments, Foreign Ministry sources said.

In 1989, Sri Lanka made a unilateral decision to close down the Israeli Interest Section, but it is quite evident that successive governments have continued to depend on Israeli support and sources say there has been a significant growth in Israeli arms sales to Sri Lanka.

The announcement of diplomatic ties with Israel came in the wake of India refusing to give military assistance to Sri Lanka, sources confirmed.

" It's a decision in the right direction...they could provide us with advice armaments and intelligence", Bradman Weerakoon, International Affairs Advisor during President Premadasa's administration said.
