The Indian armed might sought to fight against terrorism not the Tamil population
[05 May 2000]

Indian assistance is sought to fight against terrorists not against the Tamil community, political sources responded after the Chief Minister of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu warned that he would not allow the Indian armed might to be used to kill the Tamil population in Sri Lanka.

"The entire world is aware that Sri Lanka is fighting against the LTTE terrorist organization who is posing to be defenders of Tamil people. That is why India assisted the Sri Lankan government at the initial stages of the ethnic crisis in the late 1980s," political sources explained.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that he would neither let the Indian army intervene nor allow it to supply weapons to Sri Lankan troops.

He also stated that it was regrettable that the Indian Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, had not consulted the Tamil Nadu state government on the issue.

But reports from New Delhi said that Prime Minister Atal Behari Valpayee has invited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and coalition partner Mutuvel Karunanidhi and the MDMK leader, the controversial V. Gopalaswamy for crisis talks on the Sri Lankan issue, giving a clear indication of India's willingness to respond to Sri Lanka's call.

According to reports, the powerful Tamil regional party headed by Mr. Karunanidhi is likely to pressurise Delhi to keep out of the Sri Lankan conflict.
