According to Press Trust of India, the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee ruled out arms assistance to Sri Lanka yesterday. "There is no question of sending or selling arms to Sri Lanka, both are ruled out," Indian Prime Minister has said. "If the need arises we can, for example, send food, medicine and clothes. This is what we visualise". Speculation of India's military assistance built up after a meeting was held between the Indian Prime Minister and the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister on Wednesday. According to reports from New Delhi, Prime Minister Atal Behari Valpayee has invited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and coalition partner Mutuvel Karunanidhi and the MDMK leader, the controversial V. Gopalaswamy for crisis talks on the Sri Lankan issue, giving a clear indication of India's willingness to respond to Sri Lanka's call. Political analysts also believes of possible Indian assistance if the Sri Lankan scenario becomes worse after reading between the lines of what Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh said on Wednesday. According political observers, the present government has always shaped its foreign policy decisions taking India into great consideration, aware of the past mistakes. Sri Lanka perhaps has become the only country, which openly supported India's nuclear tests, which was a major sacrifice of policy. However, India said yesterday that it was giving urgent consideration to "some requests" it had received from Sri Lanka, whose troops are under threat from advancing LTTE rebels on the Jaffna peninsula.
