Omnibus emergency regulations were proclaimed by President Kumaratunga on Wednesday, with the reintroduction of a section that was removed in 1994, imposing restrictions on the media and clamping down on strikes, public processions or meetings. Meanwhile, the opposition party charged yesterday that the government is continuing to suppress the public. It accused the government for failing to take necessary steps to protect Elephant Pass Army camp even after being tipped off three months earlier of possible LTTE attacks. The UNP also demanded that the regulations be withdrawn and that steps to be taken to reach a consensus with opposition parties. Political sources commenting on the new laws stated that the government is compelled to adopt such laws to prevent false news being propagated by certain sections that would have adverse affects both politically and militarily at this crucial juncture.
