Buddhist prelates appeal India to help protect Sri Lanka's unitary integrity
[06 May 2000]

During a meeting with the Indian High Commissioner Shiv Shankar Menon recently, Buddhist prelates have made an appeal from India to intervene in the Sri Lankan crisis to help protect the country's unitary integrity.

Pointing out to India's direct historical links with Buddhism, the monks stated that India should help Sri Lanka to protect Buddhism that originated in India.

A positive response to Sri Lanka's request for assistance was given by India's External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh who told journalists that the possibilities of providing "humanitarian assistance to the Sri Lankan government should be considered".

However, he rejected "any possibility of military intervention".

Tamil Nadu DMK Chief Minister Mutuvel Karunanidhi has also given the central government a free hand to deal with the situation in Sri Lanka.
