The LTTE cadres who were advancing towards Jaffna have been stopped and the troops are retaliating attacks by the Tigers and forcing them to move to the south of the Jaffna peninsula, military sources said. The terrorists have currently lost 458 of their cadres including 116 leaders during battles in the Elephant Pass region. Security Forces in Kilaly have forced the Tigers to move southwards with a heavy volume of mortar and artillry fire, when the LTTE tried to push them back from their positions in the forward defence lines. Reports also indicate that Security Forces launched strong fresh attacks on the temporary defences occupied by the terrorists, making their positions untenable to them. Continuous attacks by the troops caused terrorists to flee southwards. Troops are now strengthening their re-located defence lines in the Pallai area to launch fresh attacks and recapture territories lost during the past few weeks. According to military sources, normal life continues in the areas of Jaffna, Kayts, Point Pedro and Chavakachcheri, with even government offices and schools currently functioning. According to the Government Agent of Jaffna, 9726 temporary displaced civilians from the Pallai AGA division have been accomodated in safe areas and the government has ensured that ample food stocks are made available to the people. Meanwhile BBC reports further confirm that thousands of troops have been deployed to prevent Jaffna town from falling into the hands of Tamil Tiger rebels with a lull in fighting in the past few days, since the Tigers launched their attacks two weeks ago. The rebels had been stopped from taking the Kilali naval base in the Jaffna peninsula, they said.
