SLA artillery counters LTTE mortar fire
[06 May 2000]

LTTE terrorists made several abortive attempts tp push back troops from their forward defended localities Southe of Kilali. Troops supported by artillry and mortar fire effectively repulsed all terrorist attempts compelling them to withdraw southwards.

Troops at present are in asrtronger position consequent to the pull out from Elephant Pass and are poised to launch attacks on the temporary defences occupied by the terrorists. Concentrated  effective artillery fire has made the temporary positions untenable to the terrorists. Continuous attacks by the troops caused terrorists to flee southwards with their casualties.

All troops in Jaffna peninsula are determined to push back the terrorists. Due to confrontations on 3rd and 4th May, terrorists are in a state of disarray. However, terrorists continued to fire mortars at the troops.

Own artillery fire effectively countered the mortar fire of the LTTE. Due to LTTE mortar fire two soldiers were killed and one was wounded.

As per monitored LTTE transmissions 458 terrorists including 116 leaders have been killed between the period of 27th April to 4th May. Most of these cadres are those who have been recruited by the LTTE from Batticaloa and Trincomalee.

Troops continue to move forward of their defences and carry out offensive action against the terrorists.
