Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is to meet with other Indian political parties to discuss on the Sri Lankan issue and decide on the response to Sri Lanka's plea for assistance in the northern conflict. "The Prime Minister has called a meeting of all opposition leaders on Monday to discuss the evolving situation in Sri Lanka," his spokesman said. India has already ruled out any direct military intervention but left the door open to humanitarian assistance. Prime Minister Vajpayees coalition also faces pressure against military action from local parties in southern Tamil Nadu state. According to the Times of India, Tamil Nadu's DMK Chief Minister Mutuvel Karunanidhi has made it clear he did not favour armed intervention or any kind of help being offered to the Sri Lankan forces battling it out with the Tamil Tigers in the Jaffna peninsula. Emerging from a 90-minute meeting with Prime Minister Vajpayee, Mr. Karunanidhi has announced that his party "would not tie the hands of the Centre'' saying OK, to the Centre's request for a free hand to deal with the emerging crisis in the island state. The head of the Indian air force arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday, amid speculation that his government is ready to provide some logistical support to the Sri Lankan troops. However, according to the Indian government the visit, by Air Chief Marshal Anil Yaswant Tipnis, was routine and was arranged before the Sri Lankan army suffered recent setbacks.
