India will give non-military logistical help, if requested and reports from Delhi indicate that airlift operations may be imminent, diplomatic sources in Colombo said, yesterday. The sources were clarifying India's "wait and see" stance about supporting Sri Lanka as expressed earlier by Delhi. However, sources in Colombo would not elaborate as to whether such logistical support would mean the provision of airlift and sea transport capability. According to AFP reports the Indian Air Force was awaiting an official green light Saturday, to air drop humanitarian aid to Sri Lankan soldiers beleaguered in an island warzone. They also claim that two large cargo planes were on stand by at an air base in Trivandrum, capital of the southern Indian State of Kerala. " The government is yet to take the final decision whether to reach humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka by air or by sea", the source said. " A decision on the composition of the aid that is to be sent is also awaited. We, however, have two aircrafts waiting at Trivandrum", the source said adding that the air force was reluctant to use the adjoining state of Tamil Nadu, facing Sri Lanka and home to 55 million Tamils, as a staging post because of "security fears".
