India says it will not intervene in Sri Lanka's current situation with the LTTE, unless both the government and the Tigers ask for mediation, officials said yesterday. "We are ready for some kind of helping hand or negotiating hand only if the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government ask for it", Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister, said. The Indian government is ready to provide humanitarian aid, but military assistance is definitely ruled out, they said. Certain lawmakers have also suggested that humanitarian aid should be channeled through the Red Cross. Mahajan claims that India has been in touch with Norway who had offered to act as a third party for peace talks, but so far had not been asked to help. " Our directly negotiating at this juncture does not arise because there is no such request", he said. " We should respect the sovereignty and integrity of Sri Lanka. But also at the same time the aspirations of the minorities, especially Tamil speaking people of Sri Lanka, should be taken care of and we should try for a peaceful and negotiated settlement in the present Sri Lankan crisis.
