[09 May 2000]

On Sunday the government of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu stopped a meeting of an organisation called Thamizhar Desiya Iyakkam (Tamil Nationalist Movement), which is a considered to be pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), sources said.

The leader, P.Nedumaran, along with 200 volunteers were taken into custody for prohibiting orders in Cuddalore district.

It was organised on behalf of the Co-ordination Committee of Tamil Eelam supporters, reports confirm.

The government has already banned any activities, which are in support to the cause of "Eelam" within the state.

Earlier, an official release said the conference was banned, as the government did not want to disturb the peace and tranquillity in the town.
