Tigers show signs of pressure against SLA counter attacks
[10 May 2000]

LTTE's declaration for a cease fire is a very transparent sign of them being pressurized by the army and the security forces determined to fight back launched a massive military operation yesterday taking advantage of the situation, military sources said.

The military operation is aimed at widening the Kilali defences.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in India said yesterday that the LTTE was no longer in a position of strength.

"I think they .... very likely will be soon on the retreat," he said.

Mr. Moonesinghe also rejected LTTE's offer for a cease-fire and stated that troops would not withdraw from Jaffna.

"So we see the point and we see that they are in a difficult situation. The military situation has changed dramatically against the LTTE".

The LTTE said that they were willing to declare a temporary cease-fire if the government agreed to pull out of the peninsula.

The government immediately rejected the unusual offer, referring to it as another psychological operation of the Tigers.
