"Sihala Urumaya" accuses govt of suppressing people's right to information
[10 May 2000]

The new political party's national co-ordinator Champika Ranawaka accused the government for placing the country on a war footing to suppress people's right to information.

Addressing the inaugural meeting of the party's Kandy branch, Mr. Ranawaka said that the situation in the country had so deteriorated that political decisions were taken by a minority party and its financial decisions by the World Bank.

He firmly stated that Sihala Urumaya would ensure every inch of the country belonged to its rightful owners and not to LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran.

General Secretary Tilak Karunaratne, outlining the objectives of the new party said it would fill a vacuum created by two main parties with which the people were frustrated.

He also said that the two parties were afflicted with "severe weaknesses".

The new party in a statement yesterday stated that its preparation to hold a public rally at Nugegoda on the 9th May 2000, was effected by the government's man on meetings etc. for a period of one month for the purpose of maintaining public peace.

"The strength of Sihala Urumaya has been proved by the government's ban of her rally. Sihala Urumaya has no wish to cause a riot or any disturbances and thereby dissipate the resources of the security forces, which should be utilised to crush the Tigers and will not, therefore seek to break the law and hold the meeting despite the ban. In particular Sihala Urumaya appeals to all her supporters to beware of agents provocateurs sent by those powerful forces arrayed against us," the statement said.
