UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan expressed his concern over the humanitarian consequences of the fighting in the North of Sri Lanka between Tigers and troops, on Tuesday, sources said. “ Thousands of civilians are in danger of being displaced. I appeal to the parties to avoid placing the lives of civilians at risk and to ensure humanitarian assistance to all in need”, he said in a statement. He welcomes the offer of the Norwegian government to mediate peace talks between the government and the LTTE and also strongly believes that a political solution is necessary to solve the prevailing conflict in the country.
