A collective international effort is being made by the Indian government along with the United States and Norway to bring about a peace process in Sri Lanka, sources confirm. “ The apparent American backing to an Indian diplomatic effort in Sri Lanka and the proposed Indo-Norwegian talks this week do lend some weight to the latest offer by the government, to mediate between Colombo and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam”, the Hindu said yesterday. According to reports a Norwegian team led by Erik Solheim, principal interlocutor between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE is arriving in India, today. It has not yet been confirmed as to whether Solheim would travel to Colombo after the Indian visit. Until recently India had been sceptical about Norwegian efforts and it is still questionable whether both India and Oslo will find common ground. Reports also indicate that Solheim was also in Washington recently for talks with senior officials of the Clinton administration. Washington has apparently conveyed its backing to a collective international effort on Sri Lanka led by India. Thomas Pickering, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs will arrive in New Delhi later this month and plans to travel to Colombo as well. India has been in touch with a number of key nations including the European Union apart from the US, France and Britain. These consultations are apparently based on a ceasefire between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government, sources said.
