[12 May 2000]

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) yesterday, suspended its broadcast of the SLBC's Sinhala and Tamil language news programmes along with the banning of all lve broadcasts of television and radio programmes.

"The government has decided to ban all live programmes for both local and foreign electronic media," Jinadasa Peiris, chairman of the SLBC said.

He stated that pre-recorded radio and television prgrammes, including chat shows with political content, would have to be submitted to the government censor for approval.

Referring to the BBC programmes, Mr. Peiris said that he was facing difficulties with the program, especially after the censorship was imposed.

"I have to obey the rules and regulations of the country," he added.

The two shortwave broadcasts were the Sandeshaya and Tamilosai, which the state radio aired on its local services under a contract with the BBC.
