ICRC and Tamil Party raise humanitarian issues
[12 May 2000]

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Tamil United Liberation Front have raised concerns about civilians in Jaffna peninsula, living amidst the fighting between the troops and the LTTE.

In a communiqué issued from Geneva last night, the ICRC expressed concern about the consequences in humanitarian terms of the current upsurge in fighting.

The ICRC also reminded both the security forces and the LTTE of their obligation to comply with international humanitarian law, which provides for the protection of the civilian population against the effects of hostilities.

The ICRC urgently called upon both parties to ensure that the civilian population and civilian property are protected and respected at all times.

Meanwhile, TULF leaders have also raised concern about the people in Jaffna peninsula being used as a human shield in the ongoing battle.

TULF leaders are to hold urgent talks with Indian diplomats in Colombo today.
