Norway meets India to discuss Sri Lanka situation
[12 May 2000]

A Norwegian delegation arrived in New Delhi yesterday to discuss Sri Lanka's present situation and Erik Solheim on his arrival at New Delhi Airport said, "The purpose of the visit to brief India about what Norway had been doing, we will assist both India and Sri Lanka to find a peaceful solution to the problem".

Mr. Solheim, the principal negotiator appointed by Oslo to assist Sri Lanka in its effort for peace, met Indian officials including Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh.

"We do not believe in any quick fixes to the conflict in Sri Lanka," he said.

"It cannot be solved in a day or a week, our efforts will go on".

Mr. Solheim also said that he had informed India about the efforts to end the conflict.

"There is no way the problem in Sri Lanka can be solved without India playing a positive role," he explained.
