New arms supplies for Sri Lankan troops
[12 May 2000]

Fresh arms and ammunition are being supplied from abroad to Sri Lankan troops who will be able to further develop their combat strength against the LTTE, sources confirm.

According to a Hindu newspaper report, the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard are planning a limited exercise near the coast and this exercise is expected to send a “graduated message” of “operational readiness” to the LTTE. Such operations are mainly to boost the morale of the Security Forces and have a psychological rather than a military aim, sources claim.

The Indian Maritime Forces are also involved in screening the refugees who are arriving in boats from Sri Lanka.

“Colombo wants to ensure that the LTTE’s artillery, which include the highly effective multi barrel rockets, is kept out of the range of the Palaly air base, the key to the maintenance of over 20,000 troops positioned in Jaffna.

Meanwhile Indian Air Force chief A.Y.Tipnis is currently, touring some of the key commands of the Sri Lankan Air Force.
