Several foreign media correspondents have expressed their concern about the censorship on radio and television news broadcasts in Sri Lanka, invoked by the government. The Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontiers (RSF) wrote to Sri Lanka's Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera asking him to reconsider the censorship imposed on May 3 which was further tightened on Thursday. According to RSF, the Sri Lankan authorities had violated fundamental rights of the people in the country. They also stated about the censorship of BBC and CNN broadcasts. The Foreign Correspondents' Association of Sri Lanka also raised concern about the invoked censorship. In a letter addressed to the Media Minister, the association said, "We write to formally express our deep concern over the imposition of a censorship on the Colombo-based foreign correspondents". "The Foreign Correspondent's Association of Sri Lanka (FCA) deeply regrets the restrictions placed on journalists providing a balanced coverage of developments in Sri Lanka". "We strongly believe that censorship undermines the credibility of news coverage out of Sri Lanka and appeal to the Sri Lankan government through you to revoke the regulations and permit the immediate resumption of free reporting". According to reports the US too has expressed concern about the censorship issue and had called on the government to avoid restrictions of civil liberties.
