Indian Air Chief briefs Indian Cabinet on Sri Lankan military situation
[15 May 2000]

Indian Air Chief Marshal, A.Y Tipnis briefed the Indian Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), over the weekend, regarding the Sri Lankan military situation, after his five-day visit to Sri Lanka, sources said.

Tipnis' first hand military assessment could be a major input in determining the extent to which India can get involved in the present crisis, especially when India's security, too, is at risk at this crucial moment, political sources said.

The possibility of involvement in response to the request for assistance by the Sri Lankan government has been a recent pre-occupation with Indian policy makers.

The meeting was presided by Prime Minister Vajpayee and Defence Minister George Fernandes and External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Singh along with services chiefs and officials of the Defence Ministry.
