India extended its ban on the LTTE yesterday, for a further two years, sources confirmed. According to sources, the decision was based on the belief that the LTTE’s idea of a separate homeland in Sri Lanka could become a threat to India. Tamil political parties from Southern India who are now members of the ruling coalition in Delhi have been calling for an end to the ban, which was due to end yesterday. The ban was imposed in 1991, after the assassination of Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi who was killed by a suicide bomber belonging to the LTTE.
