India, US closely monitor Lankan situation
[15 May 2000]

While the Indian Army is closely monitoring the security situation in Sri Lanka, the US too is concerned about the current situation in the country saying that it is getting conflicting reports about the war, sources said.

India who is especially concerned about the likely supply of arms from Pakistan has been reviewing the prevailing Sri Lankan situation for some time, now and has confirmed that they will mediate only if both parties ask for assistance.

“We are monitoring the whole situation there, all concerned people are being consulted”, Army Chief, General V.P Malik said, last week.

Meanwhile, US State Department Spokesman, Richard Boucher said last week, that they were closely watching the situation in the country and they continue to encourage an end to the violence and encourage a negotiated political settlement that will provide dignity and security for all Sri Lankans while preserving Sri Lankan unity.
