President calls all party conference
[15 May 2000]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga invited all political party leaders including the main Opposition, UNP to discuss the prevailing situation today at Temple Trees.

Two representatives each from all political parties have been invited for talks, which are due to start today, according to Presidential Secretariat sources. Sources further said that most of the political parties have replied positively to the presidential invitation including the JVP.

But the New Leftist Alliance including New Samasamaja Party had written to the President that they would not participate in the conference saying that the government media will mislead the public that they were supporting the government's war footing if they participated.

Meanwhile, the UNP has also summoned a meeting today afternoon with all political parties and trade unions to discuss the situation in Jaffna, the emergency regulation and other related issues.
