Norwegian officials have said that mediating peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE is a diificult task with the on-going war in the North, sources confirm. Norway's special advisor on Sri Lanka, Erik Solheim said in New Delhi last week that the situation in the country is so critical that it makes it almost impossible to plan the work for peace; he was holding discussions with Indian authorities on the current situation in Sri Lanka. Upon arrival, in India, Solheim said that Norway's main role at the moment was to keep contact with both parties and that he hoped that peace talks could be initiated soon, once the situation in the North is clearer. Sharing India's approch to the current situation, the Norwegian mediator told Indian officials that the solution to the problem lies with the Sri Lankans themselves in a manner by which all communities can realise their aspirations within the context of unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, the Indian High Commission in Colombo, said.
