“Operation Pasha” launched by the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard, intensified surveillance along the Tamil Nadu coast, with its close proximity to Sri Lanka, last Thursday, in order to block possible LTTE movements, sources said. According to sources, the Operation is geared to prevent medicines and kerosene reaching the LTTE cadres in their jungle strongholds in Sri Lanka. The surveillance zone has been horizontally divided between the Coast Guard and the Navy. The former has deployed offshore patrol vessels and Anderson Marine fast boats along with a helicopter component in this zone, sources said. The heavily armed Kashin class destroyers used in the exercise between Visakhapatanam and Chennai are some of the most capable warships with the navy. Analysts also view the exercise as a sign of preparedness to face the LTTE, at any time.
