Parents stage protest against LTTE for conscripting children by force
[15 May 2000]

The LTTE in an attempt to bolster its cadres conscripted nearly 150 students last week which resulted in parents of the children staging a protest demonstration at Malawi in Wanni and Batticaloa yesterday, military spokesman Brigadier Palitha Fernando said.

It has been further revealed that in spite of continuing protests from the parents the school children conscripted so far are presently undergoing military training.

The terrorists have lost a large number of cadres during the past few days fighting, and monitored LTTE transmission revealed the Tigers fighting with the security forces requesting for re-inforcements.

Instructions have also gone from the LTTE leadership to political leaders in the East to conscript more school children to boost up their depleted strength, a statement issued by the Information Department said.

In previous situations too, the LTTE had forcibly abducted school children to the armed conflict to fill ranks.

According to reports the LTTE is using young children of 10 years age as the minimum age of admission.

Although the UN Special Representative on Children in Armed Conflict had earlier assured that it would stop the recruitment of children, it is now only left in black and white, military officials said.
