MSF concerned about SLAF aerial bombing amid Tiger threats to civilians in the north
[16 May 2000]

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), a humanitarian agency in Holland is concerned about the effects of aerial bombing on civilians in the war-torn areas in the north of Sri Lanka, with the on-going war between the LTTE and troops, sources confirm.

MSF said it would be issuing a statement calling on the warring sides in the north of the island to respect the safety of the civilian population.

The Agency told Reuters that the government has been using Kfir jets to attack the LTTE who have been fighting troops for control of Jaffna, which the terrorists claim to be the cultural capital of their would-be homeland.

The Tigers over the 17-year period, on the other hand, have endangered the lives of thousands of civilians living in the war-torn areas, claiming that they are fighting for the rights of their people and a separate homeland.
