Sangha in London thank Govt for helping Buddhism gain world recognition
[16 May 2000]

I should like particularly to thank the Government of Sri Lanka for taking steps to have this day recognised by the United Nations as a holiday, stated Ven. Pandith M. Vajiragnana, the Sangha Nayaka of Great Britian who is also the Head of London Buddhist Vihara, in his letter of thanks.

"We are very pleased and grateful that the United nations Organisation has given deserving recognition to Buddhism as one of the major religions of the world and declared Vesak (Buddha Day) as a world wide public day".

Ven. Vajiragnana also expressed thanks to many other people who were involved in this achievement including the UNO.

"This day commemorates three momentous events which took place over 2,500 years ago. These are the birth, the enlightenment and the parinibbana of the Buddha. These events are to be celebrated even in the present age because what the Buddha taught is universal in its application and timeless in its appeal. Above all his message of peace, non-violence and love is sorely needed in a world so stricken with conflicts and strife. It is my hope that the observance of this day will encourage both Buddhists and non-Buddhists to open their minds and reflect a little on the teachings of the Buddha, especially on the duties and responsibilities of human beings towards one another at all levels. In the long term such thoughts may help to establish peace and harmony throughout the world and reduce the amount of suffering inflicted on one another".

"I am sure that this decision will result in a wider awareness and appreciation of the relevance of the Buddha's teachings, which will be of great benefit to all humankind".
