The CID has busted a multi billion rupee international human smuggling operation conducted by the LTTE, where on average 600 to 700 persons were sent to Europe monthly on forged travel documents, sources said. The forged travel documents used in this racket include Schengen state visas for entry into all European Union countries. Investigations into the human smuggling took place following complaints by a number of Western Diplomatic Missions based in Colombo. The racket had allegedly been going on for the last three years, sources confirm. According to investigations the profit gained by this illegal racket was used to purchase arms for the LTTE, who are fighting the Security Forces in their bid for a separate homeland in Sri Lanka.
