Diplomatic relations restored - Sri Lanka, Israel
[18 May 2000]

Diplomatic relations were restored on Monday between Sri Lanka and Israel, which were broken off by Sri Lanka in 1970 and 1990, sources said.

The restoration was formalised in a joint communiqué signed by the Israeli Foreign Minister, David Levy and Sri Lanka's UN Ambassador, John de Saram.

The communiqué said the "practical aspects" of the restoration of relations, at ambassadorial level, would be pursued through diplomatic channels.

According to diplomatic sources the two countries were not expected to open embassies, but that Sri Lanka's Ambassadar in Jordan would also be accredited to Israel while Israel's Ambassador to India would be accredited to Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar yesterday said that Israel would only provide hardware which was purchased by the government." There will certainly not be combat assistance", he said.

" We are purchasing arms and should the need arise where the equipment we procure are those we are not familiar with, it is logistical that there would be technical staff to provide assistance", he said.
