In Ullukkulama Vavuniya, Police discovered 120 Kg of explosives, which were to be used for the destruction of Colombo during the upcoming election, sources confirm. The LTTE's target was to use these explosives to kill the major ministers such as Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mahinda Rajapakse, Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, Nimal Siripala De Silva, EPDP leader, Douglas Devananda and many more politicians. The target was pointed not only towards politicians, but also at some major buildings in Colombo such as the Insurance Corporation building at Vauxhall Street and the Terrorists Investigation Unit, Mt. Lavinia. Bambalapitiya Police said that this person who tried to commit suicide when arrested, named Kandaiah Jeyaratnam, aged 29 had been waiting for the arrival of the explosives from Vavuniya, for further execution of the plan. This person had been the in charge of five units of suicide bombers, who had already arrived in Colombo. The LTTE terrorist was residing in Kotahena at the time of his arrest by the Kotahena Police. The suspect failed in attempting to commit suicide by swallowing cyanide. When investigating his paraphernalia, the Police found the telephone numbers and bogus names of six LTTE suicide bombers. Within a few hours the Police were successful in capturing the other six LTTE suicide bombers. Among them the EPDP leader Douglas Devanada's intended suicide bomber was caught, acting as Douglas Devanada's Security officer. Meanwhile the Police caught the lorry, which was supposed to transport the explosives from Vavuniya to Colombo. Jeyaratnam had been to the Department of Immigration and Emigration to withdraw some of his documents, which he had earlier submitted, to the office. For this he had tried to pay thirty thousand rupees to an officer, from which point suspicions of his behavior was informed to the Bambalapitiya Police. The LTTE had tried twelve times to bring these explosives to Colombo and have failed due to the tightened security in Colombo. Where as Vavuniya Police stated, the explosives were not the load that was to be transported to Colombo as they have been hidden under ground for three years. Therefore the Colombo District Deputy Police Commissioner Bodhi Liyanage and Senior Police Official Bandhula Wickramasinghe are carrying out more investigations on this matter.
