[20 May 2000]

According to reports from the Southern Indian port town of Cochin, the present exercise of the Indian navy’s on the south eastern coast in collaboration with the Indian coast guard was to boost the morale of the Sri Lankan soldiers fighting in Jaffna.

An Indian news Web site Reddiff reported that destroyers and minesweepers of the Indian Navy had been positioned along India’s maritime boundary with Sri Lanka.

“There is noth9ing unusual about these ships being moved and positioned. This is a routine military exercise in conflict zones to send an operational readiness message to the enemy, in the case to the LTTE”, the report said quoting an Indian navy officer.
