Ruling out United Nation intervention in the current situation, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said in an interview that Sri Lanka was exploring diplomatic means to invite India to join Norway to find a political solution to the present crisis. When asked whether a future negotiation process will be a joint effort, Minister Kadirgamar said, "Could be. It could be an effort whereby India is involved in the process and also Norway. Now the USA is also saying that they would like to be involved in the process in a suitable capacity, but always through India, with the consent of India". Responding to his Indian counterpart Jaswant Singh's offer to play a role the Minister said that his officials were looking for an avenue to approach this offer. The Minister admitted that the issue is "a very complex one for India" and declared "I would be quite content if India does what it is doing right now. That is: affirm loud and clear, not withstanding the past, that it wholeheartedly supports our territorial integrity and sovereignty". He noted that, for a variety of reasons, India makes no bones of its opposition to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)."I am very pleased to see that, apart from the central government's reaction, we have the very significant and clear stand taken by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Karunanidi". He said he has no doubt that, "India will take whatever action is necessary to meet its stated position. If it feels that Sri Lanka is seriously threatened, India will, I believe, tale necessary action".
