Jaffna's Uthayan banned

Due to the violation of censorship regulations, the government sealed the printing press and editorial office of the Jaffna-based Uthayan newspaper.

Director of Government Information, Ariya Rubasinghe said in a press release that the Uthayan newspaper, published by New Uthayan Publications Ltd. of Kasthuri Road, Jaffna which has been continuously publishing information prejudicial to the national security, has been temporarily banned from publication from May 19 by him in his capacity as the Competent Authority, in accordance with the powers vested in him under the Emergency (Miscellaneous Provisions and Powers) regulation 14 of the regulation published in the Gazette Extraordinary of May3 and May 10, this year.

The release also said "consequent to the ban, New Uthayan Publications Ltd. has been informed by the Competent Authority that they could make representation to the President in writing with respect to that order and that they may, whether or not such representations have been made, make objections to the Advisory Committee appointed by the President".
