If new constitution was pushed through war might have ended earlier says Asian Age
[23 May 2000]

The war might have ended four years ago if the President had been allowed to push through a new constitution to devolve power, the Asian Age magazine reported in its recent issue.

The 27 moderate Tamil Members of Parliament supported the imaginative blueprint that Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Dr.G.L Peiris had drawn up. Even the Tamil Tigers seemed disposed to listen. But, the governing People’s Alliance was 13 votes short of the necessary two-thirds majority in Parliament, the report stated.

The report titled “ Domino effect of Eelam” states “ Sri Lanka’s President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has ordered the Army to defend the beleaguered northern town of Jaffna to the last soldier. In doing so she is aware that its capture by the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is likely to major consequences not just in Sri Lanka but in India and other South Asian countries.”
