Speculation of India’s role in SL situation
[23 May 2000]

While there was mounting speculation that the Indian Forces would step in to solve the Sri Lankan situation, Indian officials in Trivandrum denied that there had been any large scale movement of troops, sources said.

India had so far ruled out any military intervention in the present crisis after the intervention in the 1980’s with the Indian Peace Keeping Force.

However, there is some speculation that India might play a role in the issue, with Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar saying that India is sounding out global opinion and gearing up for a role, “even if it be thrust upon it by events”.
