Protests against LTTE in Tamil Nadu
[23 May 2000]

A wave of protests have begun in Tamil Nadu, which was considered largely sympathetic to Tigers,  against the LTTE.

India's national English daily "The Hindu" on Saturday reported that a politburo member in Tamil Nadu R. Umanath has stated that the creation of  a "Tamil Eelam" was no solution to the Tamil's ethnic problem in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Umanath has emphasised that this problem would have to be resolved within the framework of a united Sri Lanka.

Describing the LTTE as a fascist terrorist organisation, he has pointed out that the ground reality in Northern Sri Lanka showed that the LTTE cannot be identified with the Sri Lankan Tamils.

Mr. Umanath, according to this report, has welcomed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's recent statement in the assembly that the LTTE, which had killed its own brethren, cannot protect the interests of the Tamils.

Mr. Umanath has also said that going by the past experience the LTTE would not be able to bring the conflict to an end even if they captured Jaffna as they would not be able to sustain the 'victory'.

Meanwhile, the same issue of the Hindu reported another provincial report quoting Tamil Nadu assembly's opposition leader S. Balakrishnan as saying Tamil Mannila Congress had already asserted that it was not in favour of the formation of the so called Tamil Eelam by the LTTE.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka should be taken into account while revolving strategy on lending assistance to the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees," Mr. Balakrishnan has said.
