Have healthy dialogue with free media – UNP tells government
[24 May 2000]

The United National Party yesterday urged the government, in a statement, to lift the provisions under the Emergency Regulations that limit free expression.

According to the Party, the government should maintain a healthy dialogue with the free media, involving mutual respect, so that the freedom of expression is allowed at all times.

“ The UNP maintain that the cooperation and the assistance of the print and electronic media cannot be achieved by imposing suppressive and draconian regulations”, the statement reported.

“ The UNP deplores the undemocratic steps taken by the government to ban three newspapers, namely the Sunday Leader, Irida Peramuna and Udayan newspapers without heeding to our requests to follow the path of democracy in respect of this issue”, they said.
