Investigations into assault of Sunday Times journalist

Investigations have begun into the alleged illegal arrest, assault and the detention of Leon Berenger, Senior Journalist of the Sunday Times on 15^th May, the Special Media Information Centre said.

This follows the complaint made in this regard to the Minister of Posts, telecommunications and Media, Mangala Samaraweera by the Editor of the Sunday Times, Sinha Ratnatunga.

The Minister apprised the President of this complaint following which she directed IGP, Lucky Kodituwakku to hold an impartial inquiry and submit the report of the inquiry to her with alacrity.

Accordingly, SP, Nandana Wijeratne has been directed by the IGP to conduct the inquiry.

The IGP has also directed that Inspector Ratwatte and a Constable of the Dehiwela Police named in connection with this incident, has been transferred with immediate effect.
