The Cabinet Committee on Security was scheduled to meet at 6.30 pm today after the Indian prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee called a cabinet meeting today to discuss the crisis in Sri Lanka. "The prime minister has cancelled his Bhopal visit and will hold the meeting to discuss Sri Lanka," an aide in the prime minister's office said. The Indian navy is also on alert in case Colombo asked for help. "But our help will be purely humanitarian and only if there is a request from Sri Lanka to help evacuate their troops. Also the navy would go in only if there are no hostile conditions.... no firing from the LTTE. This means there should be safe passage or safe exit given to the troops by the LTTE," a navy spokesman has stated. But Star Television quoted India's National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra as saying the government had not received any official request for help in evacuating Sri Lanka troops. "There are no requests for evacuation of troops. Yes, the troops are on high alert because Sri Lanka is our next door neighbor, so we will monitor the situation and review it accordingly," he said. According to a defence spokesman in India, there are 10 ships and six air crafts in Trivandrum in the southern state of Kerala, "standby mode to move out". "We are waiting for the note from the headquarters before giving the final orders," he said.
