A haul of explosives detected near Kovil
[25 May 2000]

A massive haul of explosives including a suicide jacket was detected near a kovil being constructed in Muthurajawela, Pamunugama by the Kotahena police yesterday.

According to police sources, one suicide jacket, nine hand grenades, two bombs, one 9 millimeter pistol, two magazines, 31 live ammunitions, eleven explosive devices, nine cyanide capsules, 300 grams of explosives packed in six plastic bottles, eleven batteries, five battery charges and some wires were among the recovered items.

The detection was made after the Criminal Detective Bureau questioned the owner of a kovil in Pettah who is suspected to be a key supporter of the LTTE. Last week the Chief Poosary of the kovil was arrested on allegations that he had connections with the LTTE.

The investigations have revealed that the Poosari’s wife had allegedly met LTTE’s Intelligence Chief Pottu Amman in Kilinochchi recently and agreed to transport explosives to Colombo. Sources said that she is reported to be hiding in the northern town of Pudukudirippu.
