Explosion near Norwegian embassy
[25 May 2000]

A hand grenade exploded in front of the Norwegian embassy at Ward Place, Colombo at about 8.45 p.m. yesterday causing minor damage to an unoccupied neighboring premises. No one was reported injured. The police said that the suspect had lobbed the grenade from a trailer bike.

The Norwegian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Jon Westborg told that he believed the attack was connected to his country's efforts to be a facilitator in bringing the Sri Lanka government and the LTTE to the negotiating table.

Observers said that it could be the LTTE that was responsible for the attack in its efforts to sabotage the peace process using their usual tactics or Sinhala extremists.

Investigations are continuing.
