Joint Chief of Staff General Rohan Daluwatte said yesterday after returning from the Northern battlefield that more than 1000 Tigers including several area leaders have been killed by the security forces in fierce fighting in the North. He also said that around 2000 LTTE cadres have been wounded and that the LTTE was using all its energies and resources for this battle. It would be the LTTE's last battle, Gen. Daluwatte said. Troops have been able to decimate the Tiger group headed by Balraj. The remaining Tigers were fighting under the command of Karuna, but the security forces have been able to gain the upper hand, he added. He also said that there was no doubt that the troops would win this decisive battle. General Daluwatte said that all should join hands with the security forces at this moment to defeat terrorism and called on soldiers who have left the Army without official leave to re-join their ranks and serve Motherland. Their expertise would be invaluable at this critical juncture. Despite certain setbacks initially experienced by the troops, they were now forging ahead to defeat the terrorists and stop their attempts to capture Jaffna. Dismissing reports that some soldiers were 'trapped' in Jaffna, he said air links between Palaly and Colombo have not been disrupted. President Chandrika Banadaranaike Kumaratunga personally inquires about the welfare of troops. "The valiant soldiers are waging war on behalf of the people. The people of Jaffna are with the security forces. To a man, we must be behind the armed forces at this hour," he said.
