LTTE allegedly smuggling arms through Thailand
[26 May 2000]

The LTTE might be smuggling arms through Thailand, the Thai government said today.

“It is possible that there is arms smuggling through the country”, Prime Minister, Chuan Leekpai said, while denying reports that the Tigers have set up bases in Thailand to run arms and drugs.

According to the Bangkok Post, the Thai Army Intelligence has photographed the Tigers transferring arms on a Thai island close to Phuket.

Earlier this year, reports indicated that the LTTE were operating a base in an island near Phuket, after being pushed out of Myanmar in 1996.

Thailand and Sri Lanka exchange intelligence information on Tiger activities frequently, the Thai Foreign ministry said, especially after Thailand’s pledge last year to cut arms flow to the LTTE through South East Asia, where arms are available relatively cheaply.
