Four persons have been detained by the Criminal Investigation Department in connection with the investigation into the 44 containers that are missing at the Colombo Harbour, sources said. The persons detained were a Pettah businessman, a wharf clerk, a transport agent and an acting Superintendent of Customs attached to the Colombo Harbour. Eleven employees have been interdicted up to date and investigations have been made on another nine personnel, sources said. The containers had been allegedly smuggled out of the Colombo Harbour on forged documents, without the payment of any duty, the CID said. According to CID reports, the 44 containers had been declared as carrying sheets of glass from Malaysia and Indonesia, but allegedly contained arms and explosives. Meanwhile, the Kotahena Police detected a consignment of explosives, suicide kits and arms in a canal at Muturajawela.
